Oswald is a Libra

Image
Oswald is a Libra      Don DeLillo’s Libra follows the character Lee Harvey Oswald throughout his life, while also having conspiracy chapters about the planning of the Kennedy Assassination. I think that the title of the book represents Lee as a person because I think that, even though we don’t know his birthday, he is a Libra. Some of the characteristics of a Libra that go with the characteristics of Oswald are that he is very indecisive and manipulative. I don’t think that Oswald is manipulative to other people, but he does get manipulated. A lot of people probably wrote about or thought about writing about this topic, but I thought that this topic would be fun to explore.      In Libra, one of the ways that DonDeLilloo writes Oswald is that he is a very indecisive person. Throughout the whole book, is that he is changing his mindabout whicht group he wants to support. At the beginning of the book, all he wanted to do was join the Soviet Union. “Th...

Rufus and Dana's friendship evolution

Image
In Octavia Butler’s Kindred, Dana travels from the present to the past and meets her ancestor Rufus. They started to have a good friendship after Dana saved Rufus from drowning. After Tom Weylin died, Rufus took over the slave plantation and started to use his power more. That’s when Dana and Rufus’s friendship started to become rocky. At the beginning of the book, Dana was a sort of mother figure to Rufus, but towards the end of the book, Rufus started to manipulate Dana into doing things for him.     When Dana first traveled to 1815, she saved Rufus from drowning. After that moment, they had a sort of a strong friendship. I feel like Dana only gets close to Rufus because she needs him for her to be born. Dana finds out that Rufus is the father of her ancestor Hagar, and she realizes that “He had to be the one. There had to be some kind of reason for the link he and I seemed to have” (Butler 29). This quote shows that Dana needs to get clo...

Jes Grew represented in the modern day

Image
A main topic in Ishmael Reed's book was Jes Grew. Jes Grew is a virus that causes people to dance. To keep the virus alive, a text was created. Towards the end of the book, the text was burned, killing Jes Grew. The Virus was killed, but it can still be shown in 2025 through different media of art or technology. Jes Grew is a Fictional virus that can be seen still to this day, as represented in Music. Jes Grew is first introduced as a virus that causes people to dance. As all viruses are, Jes Grew is very contagious. In Mumbo Jumbo, Reed first describes the viruses as “[Jes Grew spreads] with the astonishing rapidity of Booker T. Washington’s Grapevine Telegraph” (Reed 13). This quote shows that Jes Grew spreads to everyone quickly and how contagious it is. Music is similar to Jes Grew in a way that it can be easily spread through social media, the radio, and many other ways. With a catchy tone or an infectious beat, music can pull people in. Just like Jes Grew, music can make ...

How Emma Goldman changed Evelyn Nesbit

Image
E.L. Doctorow incorporates both historical and fictional characters in his book Ragtime. One of the two historical figures that he describes in Ragtime is Evelyn Nesbit and Emma Goldman. Emma is known to basically say everything that she believes. When she meets Evelyn, she tells her the truth, and that makes Evelyn rethink her life. Evelyn's transformation didn’t really stick, though. In Ragtime, Doctorow uses Emma to describe Evelyn’s change. He describes Evelyn before Emma and Evelyn after Emma      Before Evelyn met Emma, she was a completely different person. She was much more sheltered and dependent on others. Her dependency can be shown when she first meets Tateh and the little girl. From the first minute, Evelyn feels an instant connection to them. By inserting herself into Tateh and the little girl's life, Evelyn is escaping what is going on in her life with the Harry Thaw trial. Doctorow describes Evelyn attaching herself to Tateh and his daughter as “She...
